For a highly levered issuer, the question is rarely whether debt exists. The question is whether the company can repay, extend, or refinance it without damaging cash flow, diluting shareholders, selling assets at a discount, or breaching lender terms. Markets often begin pricing that answer well before the maturity date arrives.
Why debt maturities move stocks
Debt becomes a market catalyst when the repayment requirement is large relative to the company’s available liquidity, recurring free cash flow, or access to financing. A company with $1 billion due next year may be fine if it has $2 billion of unrestricted cash, dependable cash generation, and open credit markets. The same maturity can become an existential issue for a business with weak earnings, a shrinking asset base, and a revolver already close to its limit.

Then build a conservative repayment capacity view. Use unrestricted cash, expected free cash flow after capital expenditures, confirmed asset-sale proceeds, and committed financing capacity. Avoid assuming peak margins, perfect working-capital conversion, or a fully open high-yield market.

Separate manageable leverage from refinancing stress
High leverage is not automatically a short thesis. Stable businesses with durable cash flow, long-dated fixed-rate debt, and proven market access can operate with leverage for years.
